pandora
I’ve discovered pandora – a music service that streams songs to you in radio fashion (no rewinding or choosing what song comes next). You “seed” a station with a few artists or songs, and then when a song plays you give it the thumbs up or down. The backend of pandora categorizes each song by hundreds of attributes (they call it the music genome) and chooses your next song based on how you defined your station and what you have liked/disliked on it so far. I’m finding it a great way to discover new artists.
I have an acoustic rockish station that I’ve been playing around with, and after only maybe 2-3 hours of listening it has done a great job of picking songs that fit the genre.

poker
I’ve been playing poker every tuesday for a while now. It’s interesting to play with the same group of guys every week. You begin to learn their tells, the betting strategies, and how often they bluff. I changed up my game last night and made it about half way through the tournement before getting knocked out by a river rat. Ah well. It was nice to start betting all crazy and see some people fold to the pressure and some people come along for the ride. It’s also easier to tell if people actaully have something when the pots get bigger.

Ting turned me on to this book a while ago (still haven’t read it, but will have to ASAP). Now it’s a movie. The jist is that an MIT professor develops a simple yet elegant way of count cards in blackjack, that relies on a quick wits and a team effort in order to ultimately get the odds in your favor. I’ll be seeing this in the theaters!
